Save Our Canyons Wildfire Panel Discussion and "The West Is Burning" Film

Written by

Did you miss our Wildfire Panel Discussion on June 23rd? Tune into today to learn about about our forests and wildfires, how you can get involved, and what you can do this summer to reduce wildfires!

Utah’s 2021 wildfire season is setting records and this summer will be long, dry, and hot. After near-record low precipitation over the past year — Utah water supplies remain in serious trouble! The snow water equivalent we received this winter is less than it typically is and soil moisture is down, meaning that more snowmelt has been absorbed into the soil. Utah’s 2021 wildfire season is setting records and this summer could be long, dry, and hot.

Save Our Canyons along with our partners hosted a Wildfire Panel Discussion held on June 23rd from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Zoom. We started this event with a film "The West is Burning" from minute 0-58:15, followed by a panel discussion about wildfires in the Wasatch from minute 59:00 to 02:07. Our panel is as follows:

  • Bekee Hotze - US Forest Service, Salt Lake District Ranger
  • Brian Trick - Utah Forestry, Fire, and State Lands, Area Manager
  • Laura Briefer - Salt Lake City, Public Utilities Director
  • Robert Sanders - Utah Forestry, Fire, and State Lands - County Fire Warden (Salt Lake and Davis)

Our Wildfire Panel Discussion helped to educate people about fire mitigation, management, and preventative measures. Learn more about our forests and wildfires, how you can get involved, and what you can do this summer to reduce wildfires. This past year Save Our Canyons has been working to plan and offer perspectives and resources as part of a collaborative effort on wildfire mitigation efforts that will take place in the Lambs Canyon area and Parley’s Canyon. As we plan for a hotter future and work to prevent human caused wildfires which result in nearly 90% of all wildfires — we are appreciative of our partners who we are coordinating with on this event.

We also wanted to share with you a product that the Shared Stewardship Office and the Forest Service’s Regional Office have completed to help inform homeowners that live within a Wildland Urban Interface:
