Join Save Our Canyons for an experience to give back to the Wasatch through engaging hands-on conservation and stewardship activities.
This Project will be working to remove Myrtle Spurge In Lower Big Cottonwood Canyon with Salt Lake Public Utilities
What: Manual removal of Myrtle spurge (Euphorbia myrsinites) from areas where herbicides cannot be used due to water proximity at the BCWTP
When: Thursday, May 17th (8:30AM-12:30PM) Note: Volunteers may leave earlier if needed.
Who: Joint volunteer opportunity for Dedicated Hunter Program participants and Save Our Canyons supporters.
Where To Meet: Big Cottonwood Canyon Water Treatment Plant - PARK THERE
Worksite: Big Cottonwood Water Treatment Plant (BCWTP), or Ferguson Canyon off the Bonneville Shoreline Trail (USFS Property)

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS: protective clothing (long pants, long sleeves), eye protection (required), water bottle, snacks or packed lunch (optional)
WE WILL PROVIDE: protective gloves, removal tools, bags, training and guidance, access to restrooms and handwashing facilities.
Safety Note: Myrtle spurge contains a skin & eye-irritating latex sap. Eye protection, long sleeves, and gloves are MANDATORY for this project.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES:
- Remove invasive Myrtle Spurge by digging and pulling, focusing on extracting the root systems.
- Bag collected plants and load in trucks for safe disposal off-site.
- Broadcast native seeds or bury in the holes from spurge removal to restore appropriate vegetation.
