“Rally to Protest Presidential Attack on Utah’s Monuments”
President Trump is expected to come to Utah in early December. He is planning to take the occasion to eliminate some vast portions of Utah’s new Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. He has said that he is doing so as a favor to our very senior Senator, Orrin Hatch.
We hold that this action is unwarranted and an affront to several Native American Tribes. It ignores the petitions of nearly three million Americans asking the president not to try it. And, we believe, it is illegal.
When the president makes this move, he can expect an outcry of anger from across the country, but especially in Utah. He can also expect a variety of law-suits, emphasizing the fact that the Antiquities Act, under which all National Monuments are Created, has no provision for presidential revocation or revision of any previous president’s proclamation.
But all that is in the future, if and when President Trump acts to strip down our Monuments.
More immediately, we are invited to a rally to resist any presidential attempt to dismantle and reduce the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. Join a gathering of fellow Utahns next Saturday, December 2nd at the State Capitol, with a program of stirring speakers from 1 to 2:30 pm.
You are invited to carry your “Protect Bears Ears” and “Stand with Grand Staircase-Escalante” signs. If you don’t have them you could probably pick one up at Wasatch Touring, or better yet, come to a sign-making party at the First Unitarian Church on Monday, November 27 at 6 pm.
T-shirts, too. Don’t forget your T-shirt, even though it might be wintry. We’re told that more T-shirts will be available at Wasatch Touring and at the event at the Capitol. More information at the website Facebook dot com slash events.
But most importantly, come to the rally, and show the president how fervently we want our monuments to remain unchanged and protected. “Stand with Grand Staircase-Escalante” and “Protect Bears Ears” Rally at the State Capitol on Saturday, December 2 from 1 to 2:30 pm.
Yes! Be there! Make some history. Tell the president we want our monuments unchanged.
