On June 16th, Save Our Canyons partnered with Service Learning Camps, a national organization that connects church service groups with local partners all over the country. This was part 1 of our time iwth the group.
At 8am, volunteers, the Save Our Canyons team, and Salt Lake Ranger District met at the Bountiful Staging Area with plans to drive to the Buckland Flat Trailhead. The goals for the day were to build a fence, effectively closing off an area for habitat rehabilitation purposes. In addition, volunteers also helped build and dig in a sign to go with the fence, along with garbage removal in the area and nail removal from illegal pallette burnings with a large magnet.
After a few hours of some easy, and some not so easy tasks, we managed to complete all goals. In the end we collected roughly 30lbs of nails, 50lbs of garbage, and successfully constructed and placed the fence and sign. In addition to the tangible goals, we we’re able to provide 7 students from out of state a new experience in a place they had never been.
