On June 17th, Save Our Canyons had a second partnered project with Service Learning Camps. This time, we worked with Chris at Salt Lake City Public Lands to remove a large cluster of Dyers Woad from the 18th Avenue Trailhead.
Dyers Woad is an invasive species of weed that outcompetes local native species. This time of year, it has already gone to seed so the main goal of this project was to clip the seed heads, bag them, and dispose of them before the wind carries the seeds to nearby areas.
We began the project at 12:30 pm with a quick safety briefing and project explanation, then set off with reusable bags and clippers for a few hours. The team successfully removed the entire patch in just under 2 hours. We worked for an additional few minutes to remove a few small, but dense patches nearby.
