2025 Wasatch Stewardship Program – Popperton Park Ground Prep & Native Species Planting

On Wednesday, September 24th, Save Our Canyons and volunteers got to work on an ongoing project hosted by Salt Lake City Public Lands to help remove the non-native cheatgrass on the Popperton Park trail system, lay down and stable in temporary weed barrier, dig holes, and plant native species to help out compete the invasive weeds and begin the restoration of native plants.

Starting later in the day at 4:30pm, the team gave a quick safety briefing and plan for the day to the incredible group of 40 volunteers who came out to help with this project. We split the volunteers into three teams. One team worked to plant native starts in pre-prepped areas down near the trailhead, another group went up trail to rake out dead cheat grass, and the final group worked to lay out and stake down temporary weed barrier to prepare for hole digging which will take place in the coming weeks.

During the event, we were able to plant nearly all pre-prepped areas and made significant headway into prepping more ground. We want to give a huge thank you to SLC Public Lands for letting us come out and assist in this incredible project. Another huge thank you goes to Tori and the students at Skyline Highschool for spending the evening with us!

Check out the image gallery below to see some shots of the day’s work. These projects are proof that hands-on stewardship goes a long way in protecting our trails and wild places!
