2025 Wasatch Stewardship Program – Invasive Musk Thistle Removal At Swaner Preserve
We kicked off the week with a cool morning breeze and a warm sense of purpose at the Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter in Kimball Junction. For a Monday morning, our turnout was impressive — five dedicated volunteers joined us to tackle a dense patch of invasive Musk Thistle in the dried wetland area.
Though Musk Thistle produces striking purple blooms, it poses a serious threat to native ecosystems. This aggressive invader outcompetes local plant species and forms dense, impassable barriers that disrupt wildlife movement and habitat.
Stewardship in Action
Over the course of just two hours, our team cleared a substantial area of thistle, making way for native plants to reestablish and setting the stage for reseeding efforts later this fall.
