Wasatch Wilderness and Watershed Protection Act -- FAQ

Do you have a Question? Send it to wilderness@saveourcanyons.org

Q: How will this legislation affect Mountain Biking?

A: This legislation leaves many of the most popular mountain bike trails (Pipeline Trail, Little Water, Big Water, Mill D North, Wasatch Crest Trail, Dog Lake - Desolation Lake connector) OUTSIDE of the Wilderness Boundary. We have worked with IMBA and other local mountain bikers to craft a compromise to ensure that this increasingly popular recreational activity is preserved, while also preserving some of the most spectacular lands in the Wasatch. We have appreciated the feedback and support we have received from the mountain bike community.

Q: What is a "Special Management Area"?

A: This is a special designation that mandates the Federal Land Manager manage the areas within to maintain their existing Wilderness characteristics and roadless nature. Activities prohibited in Wilderness, will be prohibited here, with the exception of Helicopter Skiing, which will be the only "non-conforming use" allowed in the Special Management Areas. Once the use, helicopter skiing, stops (permit not renewed, go out of business, permit privileges lost, etc) the area becomes Wilderness without another action by Congress. Essentially, the lands are protected, the watershed is protected, and their is a promise for Wilderness protection in the future! Helicopters remain unaffected. Win-Win!

Q: Are dogs allowed in Wilderness?

A: Yes! Dogs and their owners will continue to be able to enjoy the areas that they have traditionally enjoyed. Wilderness is dog-friendly, so get out with your pooch(es) and enjoy the beauty of Wasatch's Wilderness.
However, many of the areas in this legislation lie within the Salt Lake City Protected Watershed. Dogs have not been and will not be allowed in the Wilderness Areas that are located inside the Protected Watershed.
